Last spring, Jeffrey Stern kicked off something unheard of before in the skateboard industry: high schools competing against one another for best skateboarding teams. Seven schools in Ventura and Los Angeles counties signed on with Stern's California High School Skateboard Club for that first season. By his count, 20 high school teams will compete when the league's second season opens in March.
Interest in starting new teams is growing, he said, and he sees more leagues in the future. "I have 75-plus requests from across the country to establish the type of league that I have here in California," said Stern, 39, of Thousand Oaks.
